Vape vs cigarettes

One thing is for sure, vape is not healthy, but if you switch from traditional cigarettes, i.e. from smoke to vapour, you will definitely help your health. Many people refute this, but they are baseless and unofficial youtubers, bloggers who can’t back it up. Ask any ai and they will all tell you that vape is not as harmful as cigarettes. Of course there may be cases where a manufacturer puts contaminated liquid in a vape and it may be more harmful than usual, but just recently there was a recall of Nestle baby food products because they were contaminated, these unfortunately can happen with vape products too, especially if you buy non-genuine and surprisingly cheap products. But contamination can also occur in normal tobacco products as many tobacco products are sprayed and various genetic modifications are made to these plants, although these are likely to be destroyed by combustion.
It’s worth watching this video which illustrates very well what traditional cigarette and vape use puts in your lungs:
Let’s see what an ai says about which is more harmful?
This is an extremely important and complex issue. The current state of the science is that the answer is not a simple ‘black or white’, but most health organisations (such as the British NHS or Public Health England) agree on the following basic principles:
The short answer is that traditional cigarettes are proven to be more harmful than vape, but that doesn’t mean that vape is healthy.
Here is a detailed comparison to help you understand the differences:
1. Traditional cigarettes: ‘Smoke’ is the main enemy
The biggest danger of cigarettes lies in their combustion. When tobacco is ignited, more than 7000 chemicals are produced.
-
Tar: This is deposited in the lungs and is directly responsible for cancer.
-
Carbon monoxide: inhibits the ability of the blood to carry oxygen, which puts a huge strain on the heart and the vascular system.
-
Carcinogens: contains at least 70 substances that have been proven to be carcinogenic.
2. Vape (E-cigarette): aerosol instead of combustion
A vape does not burn tobacco, but heats up a liquid (e-liquid) until it becomes a vapour (aerosol).
-
Less toxic: Because there is no combustion, there is no tar and no carbon monoxide. That’s why it’s often said that vape is “95% less harmful” – but that figure refers to smokers who convert, not non-smokers.
-
Unknown long term effects: as it is a relatively new technology, we do not know exactly what 30-40 years of use will do.
-
Hazardous substances: poor quality appliances can release heavy metals (nickel, tin, lead) and certain aromas can irritate the lungs.
Key differences in table
| Viewpoint | Traditional cigarettes | Vape (E-cigarette) |
| Operation | Combustion (Smoke) | Heating (Vapour/Aerosol) |
| Main pollutants | Tar, Carbon monoxide, 70+ carcinogens | Nicotine, Propylene glycol, Aromas, Metals |
| Long-term data | Known for decades (cancer, COPD, heart disease) | Limited data (lung irritation, addiction) |
| Heart system | Very harmful (Stenosis, heart attack) | Less, but stressful to the heart due to nicotine |
The nicotine trap
Both products share nicotine, which is a highly addictive substance.
-
It raises the heart rate and blood pressure.
-
It influences the brain development of young people.
-
With vape pens (especially disposable ones like POCO or HitMe), the nicotine is absorbed much more quickly and more imperceptibly due to the nicotine salts, which can lead to a more serious addiction than regular cigarettes.
Summary
-
If you smoke: switching to a vape is a form of “harm reduction” that can help you quit cigarettes.
-
If you don’t smoke: don’t start smoking or vape! For a healthy lung, anything other than clean air (even fruity vapour) is an extra strain and risk.
Another ai:
Based on the scientific consensus as of 2025, traditional cigarettes are clearly the more harmful of the two – generally considered by experts to be 5-20 times more harmful in terms of long-term risks.
Here are the current main positions compared (based mainly on large Western health organisations and large meta-analyses):
| Viewpoint | Traditional cigarettes | Vape / e-cigarette | Which is worse? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Burning/combustion products | There are (7000+ compounds, ~70 carcinogenic) | No combustion → far fewer toxic substances | Cigarettes much worse |
| Amount of carcinogens | Very high | Significantly lower (but not zero) | Cigarettes much worse |
| Lung diseases (COPD, emphysema) | Primary cause | Increases risk, but to a much lesser extent | Cigarettes much worse |
| Cardiovascular risk | Very high | Increases (mainly due to nicotine + certain flavours) | Cigarettes worse (but not that much difference) |
| Acute lung injury (EVALI etc.) | Rare | Exists, mainly in illegal/overmodified products | Vape can be worse in the short term |
| Long-term risks (20-40 years) | Very well documented, terrible | We still only have 10-15 years of data | Unknown, but probably much smaller |
| Nicotine addiction | Very strong | Often more severe (higher nicotine concentrations) | Vape often worse |
| For non-smokers / young people | – | Very dangerous gateway to nicotine | Vape much worse |
Most common positions in 2025
- If you already smoke → a complete switch to vape only (and no other cigarettes) is the best current harm reduction strategy (Public Health England, Cochrane review 2025, Our World in Data)
- If you don’t smoke → neither is good, but vape is a much greater danger to young people/non-smokers because it’s easier to get hooked and very attractive because of its design/flavour
- Dual use (cigarettes + vape together) → almost as harmful as traditional cigarettes alone, in many cases even worse for certain diseases
Short, honest summary in 2025
Do you smoke? → Better vape than cigarettes (but best = quit both) Don’t smoke? → Vape is not a better choice, and in young people a very dangerous bridge to cigarettes
Perhaps the most honest sentence at the moment is this:
“Cigarettes are like pouring petrol on a fire. A vape is like heating something on an electric stove – you can still get burns, but at least you don’t set the whole house on fire immediately.”
Both are harmful. But cigarettes are much, much more harmful for the vast majority.
